The source

What the PSC register contains

Under UK law every limited company must register individuals or entities that own or control more than 25% of shares or voting rights. Filing is mandatory and publicly available via Companies House. DataLedger structures those filings into clean, filterable datasets.

Where the registered PSC is itself a company rather than an individual, DataLedger can trace that corporate chain recursively - resolving each link until an individual beneficial owner or an entity outside the UK register is reached.

Ownership chains

Tracing control through corporate layers

Where a corporate entity is the registered PSC, DataLedger traces that chain recursively - resolving each link until an individual beneficial owner or an entity outside the UK register is reached. The output is structured with each ownership level on a separate row.

Use cases

Why use ownership data

Succession and retirement targeting

Filter by owner year of birth to find businesses where the founder is likely approaching retirement age. Combine with sole-owner flag, strong equity, employee count, and incorporation date to build a list of owner-managed businesses that are realistic acquisition targets before they come to market.

Single owner-operator businesses

Filter for companies where one individual holds 75%+ of shares and is the sole registered PSC with no corporate co-owners. Cross with sector, employee count, financial thresholds, and incorporation date to find established owner-run businesses at a specific scale.

KYC and AML compliance

PSC data is the primary structured source for beneficial ownership verification in the UK. Nationality and country of residence support screening against restricted jurisdictions. Corporate PSC entries can be traced recursively to establish ultimate beneficial ownership chains.

Deal origination and due diligence

Know whether a target is founder-owned, family-controlled, or already PE-backed before making an approach. Map group structures and identify connected entities. Combined financial and ownership datasets deliver both layers in a single file.
